Challenge
Smart Street Lighting Solution

Out with the old and in with the new. The move to change out old, high-pressure sodium lights for new LEDs prompted the states Power Distribution Company to think smart, they wanted to implement an IoT based street light monitoring system.

Being a people’s man, the chief minister always wanted to give the best service to his people and this time he thought of providing an automated street lighting. The electric provider at the same time was also thinking in similar lines, who have made the business case that it was also the time to add smart lighting with capabilities on IoT based Lighting Control.

“We are already rolling the truck and crew to change out the lights, switch ON/OFF lights and so now is the time to join smart cities and extend our capabilities to include Internet of Things (IoT) technology,” said the minister.

They also wanted to have the solution to give the optimal lighting on streets.

SOLUTION

PiServe’s Lighting Control is an intelligent solution that consists of a lighting control module, lighting control software and the AWS IoT Cloud. This technology enables smart public service providers to remotely monitor and control street and area lights.

“When I saw this module, the first thought that crossed my mind was that this device is as close as it can be to the Internet of Things,” said the minister. “It brings us information about the location of the fixture, the quality of light and system power outages.”

The Power Distribution Company is one of the nation’s largest electric cooperatives, serving nearly 4 million consumers. So far, crews have installed more than 5000 smart lighting modules in the street.

Operational Impact Impact #1

The electric cooperative plans to install 11,400 lights each year for five years. When it’s all said and done, approximately 60,000 lights will shine and provide smart sensors that can be programmed to turn on or off automatically. If a light is out of service, the Power Distribution Company personnel will be alerted right away and know exactly where to send a repair crew, light will be fixed even before reported.

Impact #2

At nightfall recently, one of the cooperative’s sub division was in the dark. An entire section of lights was off. The company sent a crew to check on the lights before the customers could even call.

Impact #3

After midnight most of the lights were switched ON even if there is no movement in the street and thereby consume most of the electricity. The Power Distribution Company was able to control lights by varying its intensity, switch ON/OFF according to the movements in the street.

RESULT

By introducing the solution, the state was able to cut down the usage of electricity 18% less than the initial case which is close to .5 million in operational expenses.
